Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé Leads Spectacular Victory Ahead of El Clásico

Real Madrid delivered one of their most convincing performances of the 2026/27 season on Sunday, October 18, defeating Sevilla 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu in a match that combined spectacular individual goals, impressive attacking combinations and an important step forward in José Mourinho's attempt to bring the Spanish giants back into the La Liga title race. Kylian Mbappé was once again the main attraction, scoring twice and producing moments of exceptional individual quality, while Arda Güler and Yan Diomande also found the net in a victory that gave Madrid three valuable points ahead of a crucial period in their calendar.

The buildup to the match was shaped by Vinícius Júnior's four-game domestic suspension, imposed after his dismissal against Villarreal for pulling Nathan Saliba's hair and subsequently protesting to the referee. His absence forced Mourinho to reshuffle an attack that normally relies heavily on the Brazilian's pace and creativity, and also confirmed that Vinícius would miss the October 25 meeting with Barcelona. Endrick was handed a starting opportunity alongside Mbappé and Diomande, while Güler and Jude Bellingham provided support from midfield.

The opening stages contained plenty of movement without immediately producing a goal, although the first half soon developed a controversy that would dominate Sevilla's reaction after the final whistle. In the 23rd minute, Güler and Peque Fernández became involved in a confrontation during which the Turkish midfielder appeared to swing his arm toward the Sevilla player. The visitors demanded a red card, but referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer allowed play to continue, and the video officials did not recommend an on-field review. Former referee Eduardo Iturralde González later explained that the available television angles were insufficient to establish precisely where contact occurred or how forceful it was. Sevilla strongly disagreed with the decision, especially because Güler was about to play a decisive role in the match.

Around the half-hour mark, Madrid produced the move that broke Sevilla's resistance. Bellingham started a rapid transition and released Diomande on the left, giving the winger room to advance before finding Güler outside the penalty area. The midfielder needed little encouragement, striking a precise left-footed effort that flew beyond Odysseas Vlachodimos and into the net. It was the kind of finish that instantly changed the atmosphere inside the Bernabéu, rewarding Madrid's willingness to move the ball quickly and allowing Güler to underline his increasing importance in Mourinho's plans.

Madrid almost doubled their lead shortly afterward when Mbappé danced through several opponents only to be denied by Vlachodimos, but the French forward soon produced an even better piece of attacking play. In the 37th minute, Bellingham delivered an intelligent backheel to Mbappé near the edge of the area. The striker turned away from his defender, accelerated into the box and evaded the goalkeeper before finishing into the open goal. The combination of Bellingham's awareness and Mbappé's footwork gave Madrid a deserved 2-0 lead at halftime. Sevilla threatened late in the opening period, with Lucien Agoumé forcing Courtois into an important save, reminding the home side that the visitors could still create opportunities despite Madrid's territorial advantage.

Sevilla returned from the interval looking for a way back, and Félix Correia came close around the hour mark when his acrobatic attempt was stopped by Valverde near the goal line. That intervention proved significant because Madrid extended their lead soon afterward. Diomande found space as Sevilla committed more players forward and helped release Mbappé, who was brought down inside the area by Andrés Castrín. The Frenchman stepped up to take the penalty in the 63rd minute and coolly lifted a Panenka down the middle, taking his personal tally to two goals and leaving Sevilla facing a three-goal deficit. His performance was particularly valuable given the absence of Vinícius and the pressure surrounding Madrid's need to stay in touch with Barcelona.

The visitors managed to reduce the deficit in the 80th minute after Mbappé lost possession in a dangerous area and Sevilla made the most of their opportunity. Substitute Manu Bueno finished calmly to make it 3-1, briefly providing Luis García Plaza's team with a reason to believe the closing minutes might become uncomfortable for Madrid. That hope lasted only two minutes. Diomande, who had already played a central role in the opening goal and the move leading to Mbappé's penalty, surged forward and unleashed a powerful right-footed effort from outside the area to complete the scoring. His goal was a fitting reward for a performance built on speed, direct running and an ability to turn possession into genuine attacking danger, further demonstrating why the young winger has become an interesting option in Mourinho's squad.
